“Andrew McAlpine’s The Volunteer snatched me by the ear first, then shepherd’s-hooked my brain. From the first reading to the fifth, I was knocked out by the unapologetic music in these poems—from the consonance that claps like cymbals to the resonant assonance and anaphora always hanging around like the last song before last call. Beyond the music itself are McAlpine’s lyric gestures, which strike the right balance of astonishment and drama, offering themselves up to the reader like welcome conversation—energetic, edifying, and always entertaining.”
