Because someone must get up at night
three times with the kid
then work the line at the widget plant
or sling plates heaped with mash
'cause of girl-faced women in weekday slips
catching cool on the steps
Daily Doubles and Scratch-It's
half-smoked butts returned to the pack
because up at the lake they're getting wrecked
on the hood of the quarterback's Ford
while his mother ponders his dirty whites
and the things that come out of that mouth
'cause Show me a perm that won't take
they like to say at the local clip and curl,
And I'll show you a parting sea or a man
who won't dance like a hog
with two club feet.
